Dick Berggren
Writer- Publisher- TV Personality - Driver
Class of 2008

Driver, photographer, announcer, journalist, television personality, historian…..when it comes to racing, Dick Berggren’s done it all.  Dick started out driving late models in the 1960’s, then progressed to dirt modifieds, sprinters, and supers in the ‘70’s.  Most of his 26 feature wins came at Beech Ridge, where he still holds the all time lap record on dirt.

Looking for money to support his race car in the early 1970’s, Dick teamed up with friends Russ Conway and Bruce Cohen to co-promote the original Spring Sizzler at the Stafford Speedway in 1972.   Dick, a former editor for Stock Car Racing and Open Wheel magazines, is the founder and publisher of Dick Berggren’s Speedway Illustrated.  Dick has also been a television reporter for over 25 years.  Those who know Dick are not surprised that he’s chosen to  work pit road, where he enlightens viewers with insightful interviews with the drivers, owners, and crew chiefs of NASCAR.  True to his roots, viewers are often treated to stories about New England racers such as Richie Evans, Ron Bouchard (who, by the way, Dick inducted at the very first Hall of Fame Banquet).

Today, we welcome driver, writer, publisher, television reporter Dick Berggren into the NEAR Hall of Fame.
